From Transylvania to Vietnam, from Namibia to Mexico, the Hairy Bikers have been travelling the world for over three years, immersing themselves in local cultures and learning to cook regional delicacies. Now it’s time to come home. The Hairy Bikers Come Home sees Si and Dave go back to their roots to discover what they have on their own doorsteps. First stop is Dave’s birthplace, Barrow-in-Furness, home to whippets, sawdust and Northern soul food. The boys stop at Green’s, where warming meat and potato pies have been made for generations. Bury market is home to the renowned black pudding, the basis of the boys’ Lancashire Hotpot, which they rustle up in front of a crowd of Bury shoppers and then it’s onto Waberthwaite, home for almost 200 years to Woodalls and their famous Cumberland sausages and air-dried hams. Over the Hartside Pass, they visit Carroll’s potato farm, before heading onto Bamburgh Castle, followed by crab soup at the Jolly Fisherman – something Si has enjoyed ever since he was a tiny boy. Next they roar down the Tyne in Dave’s powerboat to meet the trawlermen at North Shields Fish Quay; a fish market to rival any in northern France and a chance to serve up the ultimate fish pie. Finally they make it home to see Stella, Si’s 86-year-old mother, who still lives on the estate where he grew up. It’s a time to reflect on the old times, traditional miner’s fare, and how northern families catered for their menfolk.
