Tales from River Cottage re-tells the story of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s three years as a smallholder in rural Dorset from the perspective of his recent decision to embrace the life of a smallholder long term.
With all the best storylines and characters from across the River Cottage series, the episodes are themed according to the main elements of Hugh’s experiment. Each program also contains up-dates of Hugh’s progress on his new farm, as well as news of favourite characters (both four legged and two) from the three series.
Hugh shows how, while having the time of his life, he also learned an enormous amount. He started out wet behind the ears and ended up a little bit wiser and a whole lot happier.

Hugh is an inspiration, his simple diy lunchbox ideas is the best thing for a busy foodie like myself nothing beats a home cooked meal, or home grown foods
it's wonderful to watch hugh being so practical in the garden and the kitchen, it's such a down to earth show, i will never understand why there's not more shows like this on t.v to encourage people to enjoy this rewarding lifestyle. l've certianly been inspired and never miss a show.
Love the show and hugh is an inpiration , i want that simple life !!!!
I used to love River cottage, for the food, principles and location I was born closebye .however i won't be watching it again .I was inspired by Hugh's concern that chickens should have a humane 'life'and 'death'.Therefore I was shocked that he is unwilling to extend the same 'humanity to a red squirrel.Reason...it's not native to England therefore it may be bludgeoned to death in a sack.I thought there were strict laws about how animals were slaughtered for human food, what if it had been a puppy or a kitten or a lamb would this have been shown on TV. So Hugh you can't have one set of rules for white chickens which probably arn't native either and another for Squirrels who by no choice of their own are doing damage to you mate's properties. If you must eat them then at least have the decency to kill them properly. They have feelings too don't they?
I think you find that it wasn't Hugh who did the killing - It was the park ranger and the property was a national park, not a 'mates of his' Perhaps fish should be stunned and have their throat cut too? or are they not 'cute' enough to deserve the same standard?
Just started watching River Cottage in Australia. What a beautiful life, just living. It has inspired me to aim for the same lifestyle. Working for your health, future and self satisfaction, instead of working for money, taxes, and material things.
As an ex-pat pom from Dorset I love the show. Lots of familiar scenery and those wonderful Dorset accents - foods good too!
hugh's take on cooking is as my wife has been doing for ever and a day...we have a familly of six, and eat very well indeed..this show has shown me how much others have lost thier way...its sad..but hopefully shows such as these will preveil and get the population back on the right track
I'm just your average Mum and have developed Amine intolerances and discovered just how many artificial colours and preservatives are in our even every day "healthy" foods. I LOVE RIVER COTTAGE, it expresses all I believe in lifestyle and food. I can only encourage others to try and do their food normal food shop and NOT buy anything with an artificial colour or preservative....you'll be suprised!!!!
It is a gentle reminder of what life used to be like once upon a time and what the good life should be like, hard but rewarding.
the man is a genies
I think you meant to say "genius"
This man is showing us how to get back to basics something we all should be doing. i think the show is great and its been amazing just how much the river cottage has progressed over the years.
