Stuart MacGill is a celebrated Australian cricketer and noted wine enthusiast. Born in Mount Lawley, Perth, Stuart comes from a cricketing family with both his father and grandfather playing state cricket for Western Australia.
He was a member of the Australian Cricket Team and played domestic cricket for NSW. Stuart MacGill is widely perceived to be Australia’s second best leg-spinner behind Shane Warne. He is largely known for his huge leg-break and his useful googly.
Stuart is credited to have the best strike rate of any modern leg spin bowler, taking 198 wickets at 27.20 with a strike rate of 51.57. He is a high achiever and a quiet achiever who loves cricket and appreciates his wine. Stuart has studied wine marketing, writes for wine publications including Selector Magazine and boasts an extensive wine cellar.
As presenter of LifeStyle FOOD’s new six-part wine series, Stuart MacGill Uncorked, Stuart is able to share his passion for wine in his easy style that everyone will relate to. “I’m really looking forward to sharing my passion for wine with a new generation who are committed to squeezing every last drop out of life," said Stuart about the series. “If I walk into a bottle shop and I want a particular regions wine, I know it’s going to be pretty consistent from one year to the next. For somebody like me, if I’m going to be brutally honest, everybody says that was a great year, this was a great year, I have a very short term memory and I’m not going to remember what’s a great year so I pretty much go for my labels or regions.”
His television appearances also include co-presenting the food series, Saturday Kitchen, and numerous guest appearances on programs including Enough Rope with Andrew Denton, The Fat, Sports World, Under the Grandstand and Fox Sports.
Stuart lives in Sydney with his wife, television journalist and host Rachel Friend, and their two children Alex and Penny.
