MasterChef

About the show

Judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace are back to put more aspiring amateur cooks through a series of increasingly difficult cookery tasks in a brand new MasterChef kitchen.

For the first time ever, this series starts with two audition shows, in which John and Gregg have the gargantuan task of eating and judging an exciting variety of dishes to select the contestants for the main competition. With just 20 coveted places available and only 45 minutes to create a dish to impress, the heat is on. Once the 20 are chosen to wear the MasterChef apron, it’s straight on to the main competition. Nerves are running high, as any serious slip-ups will mean the end of their MasterChef journey.

Throughout the competition, the contestants are put through their paces, cooking with some of the best chefs in the UK, cooking meals in Michelin-starred restaurants for the paying public; feeding the entire cast and crew of the award-winning drama series Merlin; and flying to Australia for the finals week. The best amateur best cooks in the UK will face challenges that will push their skills to the limit, and ultimately only one will be crowned the winner of MasterChef 2011.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE - just watched the first elimination for MasterchefUSA- the man who had the original concept must be turning in his grave. Dislike the 3 judges- supposedly no one was to be belittled on the show, these judges do very little else. what a shame, I can'twatch it - Ramsey doesn't fit in

Luv the show but chefs need to think of higene - rubbing hands through sweaty hair or face.. Gross. Off putting. Have a higene chat with the contestants

Just wanted to say I LOVE LOVE LOVE this program. Only the UK formated version though. There are no judges egos - George spitting and licking his lips constantly. Unfortunately the Australian format and contestants would not reach the excellent standards set by these "amateurs". They make a lot of chefs look very average. Australia follow this format and do away with the egos and product placements.

Well said Sally360. George gives me the irrits and the hand gestures are really distracting. I have watched many seasons of Masterchef UK and find they really get into the whole cooking and skills instead of a giggle fest as on Masterchef AU

By far a far superior version of the franchise than the Aust one, no judges big noting thmeselves, no staged filmes shots, they don;t all live in a house, etc etc and the judges are more critical and have no favourites like the three Aust soft judges

I agree, this show is about the food and helping people improve their cooking skills whilst achieving their potential. You get to see their personalities but the focus of the show is great cooking. Great entrainment all round. Can't wait till September!!

My compliments on this brilliant show, loved every minute of it.Truly professional and realistic. The judges are eloquent, knowledgeable and entertaining without trying to steal the limelight. The Australian version is a joke and an insult to the viewers intelligence. Please, please UK Masterchef keep up the high standard and don't ever be tempted to follow the Australian formula!

I really felt it was so close that MasterChef would give all 3 finalists their own Trophy... if contestants are going to be this close i think scoring should be differentiated into categories, eg taste, presentation, teamwork, timeliness, crisis management or sticking with it, professionalism... and that if they are learning a certain skill, that perhaps an area could be weighted (eg presentation) and it should be a clear criteria to the contestants. I was sad to see Alice go on the basis of a dated presentation, when she had so much going for her in calmness, teamwork etc, whilst Jackie was losing it on timing and calm, and it did affect her team. imho the finalists were all complete Stars and all deserve a medal for sticking with it...and all of them for being so gracious and great team workers !! Well done - love the show ^^

  • Tressa
    September 2011

I think the final 3 were so close, each had strengths and in a way i fully expected the 3 to be given some sort of trophy... if contestants are going to be this close, i think a clearer way of scoring across criteria best be developed, like presentation, taste, teamwork, timeliness, professionalism (ie not panicking all the time or being a drama queen), a cut here or there is ok but ... enuf said... and i think if there is a focus on learning a particular skill, contestants need to know the focus... i was upset when Alice was disqualified for a 1970's presentation when she was such a star as a teamworker, calm, professional, on time etc, and felt Annie could have gone further.... but the final 3 were awesome, and imho all deserve their own Medals.

The UK Masterchef leaves the Australian version for dead, none of the over-the-top histrionics like George and Gary, and that dope with the cravat, please spare me! Gregg, John and Michel Roux Jr, quality with a capital 'Q'.

Still love the UK and original Master Chef Interesting having the Crockenbush as a dish with the finalists, this is where I think the Aussie one shined. Missed having the restaurant rounds within the series as that is something we miss in the Aussie series but we obviously have invented some items that the UK one has taken on Well done to all MC series irrelevant of the countries or contestants Can't wait for Celebrity Master Chef in UK and Junior Master Chef in Aust

Bit concerned about how the new format will go but I'll watch and see how it progresses. Didn't like our Australian version of the show (Aussie version lovers don't get mad at me, we all have different tastes) so hopefully it won't be like that. More cooking, less over-acting contestants please!

I am addicted! I find myself constantly standing in the kitchen and pretending I am at a Master Chef cook off!!! Yes I set the watch and off I go into a wild cooking frenzy, might I add with limited main ingredients, often surprising myself with the final plate. It shows what one can do when the brain goes into over-drive. I absolutely love the show and hope to have my own venture up and running before the end of the year. WATCH THIS SPACE!

    August 2010

I love the UK Masterchef and so does my husband. The Aussie version was very different, but also good - although I think the UK one actually ends up with a more accurate result, with the best cook winning. The UK show has so much more actual cooking in it and I think puts the contestants through a much tougher process to find the eventual winner. Can't wait for 7.30pm tonight - bring it on !!

I really enjoyed watching the Australian Masterchef and I especially like Matt Preston. I think that he is funny the faces that he pulls when he tastes the contestant's food. You think that he is about to say that it tastes like S**t, but he says that it tastes very nice.

The finale of MC Australia had a viewing audience of over 4 million people! It's great that it has a vast amount of Australia watching the program, talking food and not only getting back to cooking food but also trying different foods, its fantasic! It needs tweaking...it doesn't need a host, it shouldn't have contestants voting each other out or have contestants fast tracked to the finals, much less pregnant pauses and recaps ad infinitim. As a huge fan of MC UK I loathed it initially and had to decide to think of it as a totally different program. It seems to have been produced for ratings and marketability rather than the people and the cooking, but hey look at the effect it's had on people. Bon Apetit!

  • MC
    July 2009

For those that can't watch the Australian version, it must be hard being in the minority. The UK version of the show is virtually unwatchable. It has been on Australian TV since before the Australian version but has no following, and no wonder. The insipid voiceover makes it sound as exciting as a documentary on book binding. And why reinforce the UK cuisine's reputation for bland predictability? When the judge says that curry and cream is weird (huh?) and that mussels and pork as a combination is extremely unusual (anyone heard of Portugal?) you know he thinks fondly of battered fish and mushy peas.

  • Anthony
    July 2009

Far out everyone on here is so frustrating.....The Australian version has much broader appeal. Go hate on its success somewhere else. The fact a cooking show can attract such large viewers and air in prime time 6 nights a week is a testament to its format and casting. Im not saying the original version is no good, but if it were to air on commercial television here in the same timeslot, it would have been axed many weeks ago. No doubt some idiot here will claim that anyone who watches the Australian version is somehwat unintelligent and that the Uk version is so much more sophisticated because its the British. Get off your high horses, MC Australia is guaranteed to be around for many more years to come. Far out it even has the support of many top Australian, world renowned chefs, i guess they are all stupid too.

The two best cooks Justine and Chris are now gone and I would NEVER buy Poes book no one wants to eat rotten eggs YUK, I like to experiment too but not with such fowl looking food. June 2009

I can't bring myself to watch the Australian version. Looks TERRIBLE. Particularly the 'host' and the judges. One of the judges puts me off my food just thinking about him. Urgh. I sincerely hope there will be NO second season. I thought Michel Roux Jr was fantastic on Professionals. He definitely grows on you - so to those who perhaps disliked him after one episode, do watch further episodes... he's great.

  • Paulene
    June 2009

As an avid fan of the UK MasterChef, I agree, the Australian version is completely botched. It is a combination of MasterChef, Top Chef and Biggest Loser. That female presenter, I don't even know her name, is completely superfluous, and trying so hard to be Padma from Top Chef. I want to see the contestants cooking and see their skills/meals develop as the series progresses. I tape it to Foxtel IQ and fast forward most of it. And, I agree with Thinker, how are UK MasterChef team feeling about the criminal treatment of their show. We need 2 series of UK MasterChef per year!

  • bev
    June 2009

What a shame, Master Chef Australia is such a farce. Who gives a chef/cook 35 minutes to cook a paella and exepect a decent dish. Even to a Spaniard this would be incomphrehensible, never mind a would be chef. My only comment to George would be...your full of it. I cook steak all the time, beautifully i might add. However after following your tips, for a rib eye fillet, with a red wine sauce and spinach, the only thing worthy was the spinach. As any one knows, a real sauce requires a lot more than 1 hour on the stove. The expectations placed on the contestants is unrealistic, and you expect miracles from really good, potential chefs, without really giving them a chance. Shame on you, do you really think by going on this show you are sharing REAL KNOWLEDGE, or is it all about the Dollars???

  • May 2009

I agree with you Sean! I really dislike this show - its boring - you don't even have enough time to get to know the contestants to get attached. Don't know who the judges are or what they do or what they can do - they just sit around in suits and yak on. Boring.

  • Melissa
    May 2009

Could not agree more! MC Australia is an insult to to the superior UK version. About the only thing the two shows have in common might be food and even that is stretching it.

MC UK has integrity and is hugely entertaining. MC AUstralia is a dumbed down seen it before load of rot.

  • Annie-M
    May 2009

The concept of this show is so wrong! I was dumbfounded when they pitted one of the contestants against a professional chef with both cooking this chef's signature dish so early on in the competition. What did they expect would be the result??? Other than humiliation for the contestant! And on the remote chance that the contestant won, his prize was to be fast tracked through the comp and be sent home til the finals - how on earth was he supposed to hone is skills? On UK Masterchef, this would never have happened - what a totally brainless thing to do. The last 3 chefs all bettered themselves by the comraderie and competition and situations they were thrust into. How could sending someone home if they won a challenge possibly benefit their skills. The other contestants would have completely surpassed him.

  • Thinker
    May 2009

The REAL MasterChef is inspiring and amazing viewing and so I totally agree with John Donnan. I have been watching it on the Lifestyle food channel, on subscription TV for years. It is and has been a first-class series with down to earth likable professional presenters and an excellent formula. It was so predictable and unsurprising to see how channel 10 in Australia molested the series to dumb it down, sensationalise it and have it presented in such an arrogant pretentious way. It by no means correlates or does the British born series any justice or favours. I wonder when the franchise owners will realise the mistake which has been made by delivering it to channel 10 Australia. Simply channel 10 should have called it |So you think you can cook| or "Top Australian Chef" or some other unrelated cliché buzz word. The show is a poor effort and embarrassment, its food for the masses and I suppose it will find its target audience and make its money here. Im Australian in case you may wonder and suggest you’ll compare for yourself. The influence which channel 10 & 7 in Australia have in shaping our current culture with such garbage is so frustrating.

  • John Donnan
    May 2009

My wife, myself and several of my sons are devoted fans of Masterchef UK and watch each episode (do I add re-runs)religiously.

However we are extremely upset that the name Masterchef has been allowed to operate as Masterchef Australia but we guess that's what happens when commercial interests are allowed to "buy" the idea. Similar with Ready Steady Cook - Australian version; same Australian free-to-air channel, same poor representation of the British original. Thenew Masterchef Australia show is a disaster morphing into something like "Big Brother" with contestants ending up in some house for an extended period. the judges are nothing like John Torode and Gregg Wallace - if you live in Sydney they are non-entities. We are upset tjhat the original concept has been bastardised into Big Brother meets a Stove. Not for us tahnks and we are appalled that the original concept has been allowed to be stuffed up the way it has been. We are hoping more and more Australians tune out.

    April 2009

I totally agree. For some reason, us Aussie's seem to have a knack of screwing up something that the poms have perfected. I think you and should go to England and try for Master Chef over there. I know I don't want to try for the Aussie one. This is also my favourite show and I to love the drama of who will get in and who won't. I find I have become a real food critic when I eat out now. I don't look at food in the same way as I used to. These shows have certainly opened my eyes and made me a better cook for it.

My absolute fabourite show of all time.......I completely agree, I unknowingly watched an episode of Market Kitchen when prior to an episdoe of Market kichen starting, they announced 2008's celebrity masterchef winner. Totally spoilt the rest of the show for me. Oh well, can't be helpled. It's just that I love masterchef so much, I want the excitement leading up to the final result. Conclusion, I've had to stop watching Market Kitchen until this 2009 series is over. I'm afraid the Aussie format looks far too bloody dramtic already. Trust 10 to screw something good up.

We really enjoy watching this show! After seeing the first episode we thought that the competitors would at least have some idea of cooking. We love the show & watch it every night however we always wonder why they complete the pressure cooker section as this is never taken into consideration when judging the winner for the night. Also why does it appear that John always gets his way.

    March 2009

I'm an addict. Great show, terrific tension and inspirational food ideas. I agree with carlynsonny4ever - Peter should never have won. He missed a crucial challenge in the final because he was "sick". That placed pressure on the other contestants who came through with flying colours. His reliance on black pudding to win was a crying shame.

I have watched each season and look forward to this one. But there are times that I do disagree with Greg and John. I still think that Peter should never had won in season two, how he was in the final 3 still confuses me to this day.

The show has a terrible fascination for me. I cannot imagine why anyone would want to put themselves through the ordeal of having their food sneered at by those two picky judges. And I hate the quarter finals, I think it is horrible to make someone go home without cooking. But I keep watching. It is horribly compulsive.

Michel Roux Jr is an immortal, his dry approach is legendary and a cult figure. Anyone who doesnt like him is a muppet

I love John but possibly they required someone with a little more stars to their name, plus John is doing another food series with one of the celebrity chef winners.

I like many avid watchers love the show, and I would love to know what the fab 4 finalists in each series do after this amazing experience, is that it, is all that potential lost or do they get their dream?

Have a look on the BBC website to see what happened with each of the finalists later on. Google masterchef goes large.

I live in Australia and watch this show all the time. The passion the hosts show when experiencing the food these amateurs cook and the journey is awesome!! I am totally addicted to the show. I thought 2008 final absolutely incredible and really hope. I believe James was an exceptional cook and it was his overall passion that got him the win but as for Emily, she totally blew me away. I so hope that girl does not stop and does ultimately become a chef. Her food was totally amazing and inspirational The show is coming to Australia soon but without John and Greg who I believe make the show work I am not sure how it will go. Fingers crossed they find the right presenters

One of the best cooking shows on TV. Anyone with culinary flare, a sense of taste and knowledge of food , can go far! Love what you do and do what you love ... John & Gregg are encouraging and informative... the perfect hosts. I have been watching since 9.00am ( its now 4.30pm )... with HOURS to go ! Keep them coming.
