Three of them are in Australia, and among this elite few is Flower Drum. Melbourne’s most famous restaurant has upheld 30 years of tradition, seducing diners with the diverse pleasures of Cantonese cuisine. And the service? The consummate professionalism of Flower Drum’s staff is the benchmark by which all other Victorian restaurants are judged. Nothing escapes observation, every desire is attended to, often before you even have to ask. Watching the waiters gracefully set each table is theatre in itself. The atmosphere is serene yet convivial, and the dining room with its exotic deep red and chestnut tones is divided into secluded spaces by beautiful Chinese screens.
The a la carte menu is a lengthy excursion into the cuisine of Canton. Trust in your waiter’s advice, and for a truly adventurous experience, Anthony Lui’s specials will surprise and delight even the most seasoned connoisseurs of this cuisine. Shanghai dumplings have marvellous texture, and every ingredient stands out proudly yet blends in harmoniously. The Szechuan eye fillet is impossibly tender, the Peking duck simply superb. If cost is no issue, and you are passionate, or simply curious about authentic Chinese cooking, Flower Drum is an experience you must savour at least once in your life.
