Restaurant Balzac

141 Belmore Rd, Randwick NSW 2031

Ph. (02) 9399 9660

Restaurant Balzac began with Matthew Kemp's desire to offer quality dining in Randwick.

Indeed, as reviewer Matthew Evans put it: “He could be cooking with more expensive ingredients at the top end of town but Matthew Kemp uses exemplary skill at a modest bistro. Every dish is a winner.”

The demand for Matthew’s food grew so much that after only a few years, Balzac relocated to larger premises. Restaurant Balzac is now housed in a graceful historical two-story sandstone building; a perfect setting for Kemp’s elegant cuisine, which combines old-fashioned British comfort food with classic French techniques and innovative modern twists.

The philosophy behind the restaurant is simple. Restaurant Balzac always uses the finest and freshest produce from Australia’s top producers to create innovative and interesting dishes. As Terry Durack attests: “Kemp’s food is always good to look at… almost every dish I try, there is that same careful interplay of texture and flavour.”

Balzac is a fantastic restaurant, I've eaten there many times and never been disappointed (unlike Bondi Icebergs, where I had dry, overcooked fish). The degustation is particularly recommended and really makes the meal a special occasion. Long may they reign!

A special-occasion indulgence that's a $10 taxi-ride from my door with wow food that never disappoints

Restaurant Balzac serves the most delicious food ... a great modern European style with a mix between British and French ... I had a chestnut risotto here once that has haunted every other risotto I have ever eaten ... just so good!

We've been to Balzac many times and never been disappointed. The food is excellent, especially the degustation menus, and the service is first rate. We feel very lucky to have one fabulous restaurant as our favourite local - hope it stays around forever!

BEst foodie experience.
The venue is beautiful, and it is very inviting.
We had a 8 course degustation, which was out of this world.
The service was fantastic.
I have been back many times, as it is my favourite restaurant in Sydney.

This is the place to go for that speciasl occassion. Chef Mathew Kemp is innovative with the dishes and the menu is always changing. Front staff are friendly and attentative and always remember repeat customers. You always feel welcome. The decor is simple but elegent. I nearly always go for the degustation menu as it is good value and allows you to try a lot of dishes. Wine list is extensive and there are plenty by then glass. I highly recommned this restaurant to all comers.

Superb standard of food in both taste and appearance, personal service both in booking and at table. Unexpectedly met people I knew. French is a favourite and best this side of Sydney Harbour Bridge.
