Mum's dahl (lentil and potato curry)


Easy vegetarian dish containing lentils that my children love to eat. My niece has and Indian husband who loves to cook and this is my version of his dahl recipe.

Serves 4

Ingredients

  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1 crushed clove of garlic
  • 1 teaspoon tumeric
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 - 1 teaspoon chilli powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 chicken stock cube
  • 1 cup orange lentils
  • 3 cups of water
  • 1-2 finley chopped potatoes
  • Option:
  • Some of the water can be replaced by tinned tomates depending on your taste.

Method

  1. Fry the onion and garlic in small amount of oil in large wok or deep saucepan. When soft, add the spices except garam masala and cook until fragrant.
  2. Add lentils, water, stock cube and chopped potatoes.
  3. Bring to boil and then simmer until lentils are soft and potatoes are cooked. Stir regularly and add more water if required.
  4. Add garam masala.
  5. Serve with basmati rice
