Beer Bread


This is rich and dense, almost like a fruit loaf. Serve sliced with butter for mid-morning or afternoon tea.

Serves 4 to 5

Ingredients

  • 400g dates
  • 400g plain flour
  • 200g caster sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 50g butter
  • 300ml beer or lager
  • 1 and a half teaspoons bicarbonate of soda

Method

  1. Bring the beer to the boil and pour over the dates with the bicarbonate of soda. Leave aside until cold. Rub the flour and butter together, add the sugar and mix.
  2. Whisk the eggs and add to the above dry mixture along with the date mixture.
  3. Mix well.
  4. Pour in to a lined loaf tin and bake for 90 minutes 150c/300f/gas mark2.
