Apple pie

My Gran's apple pie.

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup butter or margarine
  • ½ cup castor sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 ½ cups self-raising flour
  • 1 cup plain flour
  • Filling
  • 8 large granny smith apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • Sprinkle of sugar

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg and water and beat well.
  2. Sift in flours and mix until combined.
  3. Halve the pastry and press one half into a greased pie dish making sure the pastry is even.
  4. Peel and cut apples into thin slices and put into a saucepan with a dash of water and sprinkle of sugar. Simmer until apples are just soft. Drain excess juice and allow to cool.
  5. Place apples into the base of the pie dish. Roll out the other half of the pastry and put on top of apples. Place in oven and cook for 20 minutes. Serve with cream and custard
