How to protect slate table tops?

Hello friends,

I have antique coffee tables that have black slate inserts. I have stripped off the old finish, and am wondering how to protect the slate from here. Do I finish it like the wood with a clear lacquer? Or use something different?

Thanks for any useful advice.

There are commercial products available for stone surfaces. Here is one web site I found, using Google

Hi,

Thank you so much for your link. It helped me a lot and nice to meet you. I have checked at a paint store to see if they carry a sealer, rather than a clear coating.

Thanks,

To maintain a slate table top and keep the appearance and color in good condition, periodically reapply the final oil finish used in the sealing process. This is a simple process: wipe on the oil finish, buff with a soft cloth, and wipe off any excess. Frequency depends on use, but we recommend re-applying approximately once every 2 years for an occasionally used dining table.
