Gordon Ramsay

Celebrity Chef

Part restaurant empire-builder, part celebrity, and part sublimely talented chef, Gordon Ramsay is a truly global star in the cooking world.

It all could have been all so different though....

Scottish by birth, Gordon Ramsay was raised in England after his parents moved south to Stratford-upon-Avon. His first career break came while playing football for Oxford United where he was spotted by a Glasgow Rangers scout in a F.A. youth club match. After completing trials he was signed by the Scottish champions at the age of 15. Three years later he had given up professional football and gone back to college to complete a course in hotel management.

Ramsay moved to London, where he joined Marco Pierre White in the early days of Harvey’s in Wandsworth. After a couple of years Ramsay’s moved to Le Gavroche to work alongside Albert Roux. This was followed by three years of working in France in the kitchens of Guy Savoy and Joël Robuchon.

In October 1993, Ramsay became chef of the newly opened Aubergine, where he won many accolades, including two Michelin stars within three years of opening.

Ramsay’s first book, “Passion for Flavour,” was published in October 1996. His second book,”Passion for Seafood,” was published in May 1999. “A Chef for all Seasons” was published in September 2000, followed by “Just Desserts” in September 2001 and “Secrets” in 2003.

In 1998 at the age of 31, Ramsay set up his first wholly owned restaurant, Gordon Ramsay, on the former site of La Tante Claire in Chelsea. A year later he opened Pétrus with his protegé Marcus Wareing as Chef Patron, in St. James’s. Within seven months it had won a Michelin star. In October 2001 Gordon opened Gordon Ramsay at Claridges which gained a Michelin star in 2003.

In June 2000 Ramsay won The Chef of the Year Award at the Cateys. His restaurant Gordon Ramsay was voted the Top Restaurant in the U.K. with a score of 28 in the 2001 London Zagat Survey, and was also named as the best Fine Dining Restaurant in the 2001 Harden’s Guide. These ratings continued in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. On January 19, 2001, the original Gordon Ramsay restaurant gained its third Michelin star in the Great Britain & Ireland Red Guide.

Gordon Ramsay Holdings Limited took over the whole of the food and beverage operation at The Connaught Hotel in October 2002 and installed chef Angela Hartnett whose restaurant MENU won its first Michelin star In January 2004.

In 2003 Gordon Ramsay Holdings re-launched The Savoy Grill with Marcus Wareing. The restaurant achieved its first Michelin star in 2004. This was followed with the opening of Boxwood Café at The Berkeley alongside the Michelin star Pétrus, which had moved from St. James’s. Finally, Banquette launched at The Savoy in December 2003.

In May 2004, Ramsay headed “Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares,” a series of four one-hour programs, which was awarded a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts). The show which saw Ramsay attempt to rescue restaurants around the country in need of immediate assistance, was launched simultaneously with Ramsay’s recipe book “Gordon Ramsay Kitchen Heaven.” This was followed by ITV’s “Hell’s Kitchen,” where Ramsay was given two weeks to train celebrities into Michelin-star chefs.

2005 saw a second series of “Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares” followed by the very successful version of “HELL’S KITCHEN USA”. Ramsay also starred in “The F-Word,” a high-octane food show in which the action was set against the backdrop of a full working kitchen. Over the course of the show, Ramsay and his brigade prepared a three-course meal for diners.

Ramsay's sixth book, “Gordon Ramsay Makes it Easy,” came out in May 2005. Ramsay also launched his eighth restaurant, MAZE, in London’s Grosvenor Square alongside Head Chef Jason Atherton. Winner of a host of awards, the acclaimed restaurant offers a flexible menu focusing on French Cuisine with Asian influences.

In July 2005, Ramsay opened his first restaurant in Japan at The Conrad Tokyo, the city’s newest luxury hotel with Head Chef Andrew Cook heading the kitchen. Topping off an extraordinary year, Ramsay was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) in the New Year’s Honours list.

Ramsay will launch his first New York restaurant next September at the Rihga Royal Hotel. There will be a 100 cover fine dining restaurant akin to restaurant Gordon Ramsay, and also a bar where less formal dining along the lines of Maze For more information about Gordon Ramsay click here: http://www.gordonramsay.com/

I think Gordon Ramsay is great and I am a big fan of his. I really love watching his show Hells Kitchen and I have some of them on DVD. My friend is also a big fan of his so she named her cat after him. He is a very cranky cat and when I went to pat him the other day he scratched me.

Although I like this new format, I find it a bit annoying to hit the more button all the time. I wish it was like what it used to be when everything came up all at once but at least I can read it better. What does everyone else think? I am also a very big fan of Gordon Ramsay. I think that he is great.

I love all Gordon's shows and recipes!! He definitely one of THE best chefs (if not the best!!).. He totally loves food and is passionate about it and doesn't suffer fools gladly.. He might rant and rave sometimes in the kitchen, but who wouldn't with some of those ignorant people?? Some of them are so disrespectful of him.. He has 3 Michelin stars!!! I find some of those so called " chefs " unbearable!!!! Most of 'em shouldn't be working as chefs, but just cooks... Sorry, I've been dying to rant on about them for years!!!! LOL... I respect him for putting up with them for so long, all in the name of good food and good cooking!!!!

I am looking for the pork belly recipe

    • jmood20
      December 2010

1.5kg pork belly sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • 2 red onions, halved • 2 carrots, peeled and halved lengthways • 2 sticks of celery, chopped in half • 1 bulb of garlic, skin on, broken into cloves • a small bunch of fresh thyme, leaves picked • 600ml water or stock

Preheat your oven to full whack, it needs to be at least 220°C/425°F/gas 7. Place your pork on a clean work surface, skin-side upwards. Get yourself a small sharp knife and make scores about a centimetre apart through the skin into the fat, but not so deep that you cut into the meat. Rub salt right into all the scores you’ve just made, pulling the skin apart a little if you have to. Brush any excess salt off the surface of the skin and turn it over. Season the underside of the meat with a little more salt and a little black pepper. Place your pork, skin side-up, in a roasting tray big enough to hold the pork and the vegetables, and place in the hot oven.

Roast for about half an hour until the skin of the pork has started to puff up and you can see it turning into crackling. Turn the heat down to 180°C/350°F/gas 4 and roast for another hour. Take out of the oven and baste with the fat in the bottom of the tray. Carefully lift the pork up and transfer to a chopping board. Add all the veg, garlic and thyme to the tray and stir them into the fat. Place the pork on top of everything and pop the tray back in the oven. Roast for another hour. By this time the meat should be meltingly soft and tender. Carefully move the meat to a serving dish, cover with tin foil and leave to rest while you make your gravy.

Spoon away any fat in the tray, then add the water or stock and place the tray on the hob. Bring to the boil and simmer for a few minutes, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon to scrape up all those lovely sticky tasty bits on the bottom of the tray. When you’ve got a nice, dark gravy, pour it through a sieve into a bowl or gravy boat, using your spoon to really push all the goodness of the veg through the sieve. Add a little more salt and pepper if it needs it. Serve the pork with the crackling, gravy, some creamy mashed potato, nice fresh greens and a dollop of English mustard.

Gordon, you have done some fabulous stuff in terms of recipies and improving the general state of some appalling institutions who like to thing of themselves as associated with food. I do admire your contribution to philanthropy ie the London Marathon. However of late you have unfortunatley become rather well known for your philandering....I would like to think you were better than this and that you will recover. Please keep doing your day job and keep raising pigs, sheep, chickens............Melbourne, Australia

Gordon Ramsay is honest and tells people what they do not wish to hear( but need to). I would absolutely die on the spot if he could teach me to cook. I feel as though I can, but it's the same old boring meals I always cook. The recipes on his site all have ingredients that I have never even heard of, let alone cooked. February 2010

I got one from my son's (army) cadets corp:) even has the history of it. here it is

Yorkshire puddings olive oil or butter 2 eggs (must be at room temp) 2 cups (500 ml) milk 2 cups (284g) flour salt, pepper or seasoning to taste

pour oil, butter, or drippings from roast beef into containers (ceramic ramekins give great results!) and heat in oven with main course. lightly beat eggs, add milk and lightly beat in the flour and seasonings. pour into hot containers and bake at 375F (190C). yorkshires should puff up and are ready when golden brown.

a standard with tradional english roast beef; these golden-brown puffy yorkshire puddings are just great! for very best results use bread-making flour; the higher gluten content gives yorkshires that stay beautifully puffed up.

brief history of yorkshire puddings: "yorkshires" have a humble origin back in the middle ages when they were known as "dripping pudding". the batter was cooked in a pan under the meat that was being roasted so that the fat and flavours from the meat were incorporated into the pudding. it was used as a filler in hard times when there wasn't enough meat to go around, and even used as a main course on it's own with onion gravy. hannah glasse, a housewife, is credited with upgrading the original dripping pudding recipe to it's status of yorkshire pudding. her cookbook, the art of cookery was published in 1747 and was the best of it's kind for decades.

(my note: i use oiled muffin pans, works great!)

Maybe the people that invite Gordon Ramsey to their place of business need the harsh words its a tough cruel world out there and if they didn't need his advise they would have asked. I'm sure they have seen his shows. Should know what to expect, or maybe they r gluttons for punishment. LOL

My husband and I watched a part of one programe and switched over to something else. There should be a law against the way he screams at ppl. He is absolutely awful - maybe a great cook but a bad mouth, He's extremely verbally abusive and we would not want to eat his food if this is how he treats his staff and other ppl anyway. What a horrible, horrible man! Food and ppl should be respected, but he puts it all in the gutter. We think he needs treatment ~ urgently! If he cannot maintain control with his attitude at work then he certainly cannot keep control at home with his wife and kids. What comes out of this mans mouth completely puts you off his food, he shames ppl and treats them like scum ~ and that is NOT right!! So NO to his programes and any of his food and he should not be able to get away with what he says and does to ppl, its almost bordering on being criminal!!

iI think his shows are entertaining but I would like to see him cooking more. His swearing is a bit over the top but as the majority of people say you do not have to watch it and the contestants knoww what they are in for when they go on the show,it seems to me they are all very good actors.

  • MLC
    June 2009

All i can say is that this bloke is a total ....Personly i would not rate myself a big fan of Tracey Grimshaw but what came out Ramsey's mouth more than once was not called for. Go back home to your own problems.....and take ER35 with you..

  • ER35
    June 2009

Also, I think if Gordon Ramsay wasn't the way he was, he would probably lose half his viewers. I know someone who knows him personally and says he is a top bloke out of the kitchen. He is the way he is in the kitchen because the restaurant business is so fickle and competitive. He demands perfection in the kitchen because that is what people expect when they eat out. If he did things by half, he would be out of business in no time.

  • Michael66
    June 2009

This ... is not in the restaurants that produce the winning edge, He is jetting about swearing at everything in site, It's called shock TV and he does it oh so well. Keep in mind the myriad of other Celebrity Chefs that produce award winning recipes with a civil tongue and at no ones expense.

  • Peter
    June 2009

I am so disappointed in Gordon Ramsey's Australian visit. His absolutely insulting behaviour to one of our best loved reporter's was just low and disgusting in the language used. His attempts to distance himself from the situation was even more disappointing showing that he can't even stand up to his own foul comments. Even our Prime Minister called his comments 'low-life'. We used to like Gordon Ramsey. Now we don't and we, along with many Australians, will not be having anything to do with him.

  • Bogdan Kwiatkowski

I am surprised that there are so many fanatics of that *** Ramsey. He is not any chef at all.He has got his fame by being vulgar arrogant and offensive to everyone (including his family). I have never watched any of his shows and God help me I won't watch them in the future.

I'm a bit like you.... i expect people to not be so brainless, i expect them to use common sense more than they do. But at the end of the day YOU should realise that not everyone thinks the same way, and i find with YOU and ME, the people closest to us start to concentrate more on fear of not living up to OUR expectations, and less on the actual tasks we are expecting of them. Hence, they get even more clumsy. Fear is driving them, and fear is making them lose sight. And if WE realised that WE do this to people, don't you think WE should have a bit of a look in the mirror and try a different approach to "motivating" people. FOOD FOR THOUGHT.

I think Gordon needs to get off his high horse. The man is a great chef but thinks he is the best ,he is very self opinionated And only helps people for the Tv ratings he would not give a flying f...k about anybody but himself so all you Ramasy fans stop the bull..s..t and knocking people who have something bad to say because you think gordon is god when really he is a celebrity chef thats it no better than any other celeb. There are plenty of Chefs out there far beter. And dont say if you dont like him change the channel because thats the only answer you can come up with.

I believe despite all the comments people make about how the swearing and attitude are overwhelming..unacceptable..etc...etc..GORDON is compelling viewing...otherwise please explain how the man can possibly have award winning restaurants around the world, plus tv shows like F Word, Nightmares Kitchen plus Hell's Kitchen!!!!....and for all of you complaining....you DO have a choice...SWITCH OFF!!! Gordon is a passionate professional, inspirational and I love watching you cook and cooking your recipes...you ARE A LEGEND!!!

  • Madeleine Hutchison

Gordon Ramsay needs to stop his swearing it is totally unacceptable in the work place. Australian's like myself, would not tolerate his bad attitude. His communication skills are bad and his body language are bad. There are plenty of proper words to use in the english language. Customers do not want to here that language. Ramasy you are rude! and I find your language offensive. Start using professional words please. or I will stop watching your show.

I actually think that all that swearing Gordon Ramsay does is just a gimmick and I also thinks that it livens up the show. I too am an Australia and I don't find his language offensive at all. In fact if he doesn't use it, then I turn his show off. I get a laugh out of it. I also think that things do get very hectic in the kitchens in this big restaurants and I believe that the chefs there do use a lot of strong language. I think that is just caused by stress due to getting the meals out on time.

I just watched a rerun of "Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares: The Fish & Anchor" (season 5) where he is trying to teach Karen (along with her husband Mike) to calm down, keep her temper in check, and to quit arguing. You have got to be kidding me! Talk about the blind leading the blind! He swears, screams, and argues through the whole episode. Typical Gordon....do as I SAY, not as I DO.

I wish Gordon Ramsay would do an Australian version of Hell's Kitchen as I think that it would go over great. I know that I would be the first one to watch it. I don't think that I would like to appear on it though as my cooking isn't up to scratch and he would use some very strong words about it. I can cook myself a meal but i can't cook anything too exotic.

i think gordan ramsay is one of the most talented chefs in the world. i love his antics on the show. i would love to meet him personally. next time i go overseas i will be making sure i go to one of his restaurants. i totally agree with MICKT68. gordon is my inspiration. Look where he has come in life. we can all do that if we want. so what if he swears. thats life. turn the tv off if you are offended. my attitude is, the contestants know what he is like so dont go on the show if you cant or dont handle it. also dont watch his show if you have an issue. BUT dont diss him out as a chef as he has more mitchelin stars than any other chef

  • MickT68
    January 2009

Gordon Ramsay should be known firstly for his success as a chef, secondly for his success as a restaurant entrepeneur and last, but not least, for his success as a media personality. Why must we always try to cut down the tall poppies? Respect his work and his work ethic - even if you don't respect his personal misgivings (which, to be honest, don't we all have?). Nobody is perfect and we shouldn't expect those in the public eye to be either. They are victims of their own success!

  • jackicam
    January 2009

Do people think that all other chefs have the same personality in the kitchen as they have on tv! Behind the scenes they all probably make Gordon look well behaved. At least with Gordon what you see is what you get - he has such a high standard of cooking that when confronted by ineptitude or reticence, he loses it. But he's constantly raising the bar - good for him!

We all choose what we want to watch, so if you don't like it, turn it off! Here is one man very passionate about his work and unfortunately when you are at the top of your game there is always someone out there trying to knock you off your pedestal. WOW!!! Whether you love him or hate him...he's definitely having the last laugh - all the way to the bank!!! There are more comments on Gordon Ramsay's page than any of the other chefs. As a celebrity he knows that a bit of controversy gets people tallking - the more people talk about him, the more people out there know about him & the more money he makes. I don't think he gives the slightest damn about what people say about him - he's no doubt making more money than any of his critics or fans ever will.

  • GT26
    December 2008

As a professional cook for 20 odd years, I admire his passion & obvious love of fine food..... However, there is an old saying YOU GET MORE BEES WITH HONEY THAN YOU DO WITH VINEGAR !!! I personally couldn't stand being berated & shouted at for no huge reason if I worked in his kitchen. If I'm going to learn the craft off someone, I need to be TAUGHT, not shouted at. I always wonder how he taught his kids things like toilet training, driving a car and junior sport .... I SHUDDER TO THINK. Having said that, I DO find KITCHEN NIGHTMARES compelling !!! As a pro cook, I have seen the sort of things he highlights.

Come on get real, you can't assume Gordon goes off his rocker at his family........NO WAY. He is a wonderful family man that simply adores his wife and children and has worked his Bollocks off for them. You can continue to be compelled, even inspired by his shows, and just look upon his outbursts as someone who is bursting with passion, and wanting nothing but the best results. Imagine just how awesome dining at one of his restaurants would be knowing how high his standards are.

There's nothing much to watch on tv at the moment so I watch one of my Hell's Kitchen DVDs. I actually get a laugh at them at times. Just enjoy his shows. Listen Betsy, first of all there are people who talk that way all of the time, so they won't be offended. No it doesn't mean you have to like it...even i find myself bored only because there are so many other words he could use. The thing is, it is television, and now days television uses shock value to attract audiences. The main thing is if you cannot stand him, there is a little button you can press to get away from the cussing etc. Someone below had a good idea for you to purchase his books, or his recipes can even be found all over the web. He is a wonderful chef, no doubt. As far as cheating, its sad, but more people than you think have cheated. That part of Ramsey's activities are NOT our business. That is his personal life. We tune in for the food knowledge from a great chef, period. I vote u stay away from the show and read his books hun.

    • Cathleen
      July 2010

Hey Betsy, i think you should learn to spell and speak before you judge other people. Firstly for a person who's only 16 you sure know your way around the F-word Secondly, his show is not for children, your children should be in bed sleeping, a good parent would see that it has parental guidence and not let their child watch it. Just like your personal life and who you sleep with has nothing to do with Gordon Ramsay, he's has nothing to do with you. He's a brilliant chef and good at what he does, dont loose focus of that. What he does in his persoanl life is between him and his wife - so keep your opinion to yourself - Cathleen, South Africa

    • Claire1993
      April 2010

i would like to say, that although i dont totally agree with swearing and that is my personal choice, it is up to the individual if they would like to swear. i agree with the people who stated it's a gimic for the show; it get's the show talked about, obviously it works. this is supost to be a forum about a great chef and his work... not about personal choices or habits. little 16 year old i would say you have no idea what the hospitality industry icludes... ultimately pressure. under pressure situations get heated. If he didn't push his staff to the best of their ability then he wouldn't be a very good teacher. he has a high standard and encourages his staff to also have that ambition, and that what makes him great.

Also your spelling is really bad.. and you can not put that down to fast writing.... Children wouldn't be watching the show in the first place as they're are probably watching play school. and it's not like kids don't hear swearing anyway.

i think you need to get a life!

I came on here to get information about an assignment and you just post ...... grow up little girl

    • sisters
      February 2009

i WAS GOING TO SAY grow up and get a life, BUT YOUR ONLY 16. So i shall simply say MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS, what he does or doesn't do in his private life is simply between him and his wife. Maybe you need to read his book HUMBLE PIE, he had a terrible time and was worked to the bone, he simply goes off his rocker because he wants HIGH STANDARDS.

You complain about his language, yet I notice at 16 years of age you can't spell. Nor it seems can you punctuate your work. You grammar also leaves a lot to be desired dear. If you don't like his shows don't watch them. Your obvious immaturity is blatant in the fact that you obviously believe everything you read. Maybe he played up on his wife, maybe he didn't. If his name wasn' t Gordon Ramsay, no one would give a damn. The media are notorious for there gossip mongering not to mention the amount of money and notorioty the said women would have gained. Perhaps if you learnt basic literacy skills you would be able to succeed as well in life as Gordon has.

In the end the show has nothing to do with his personal life and it should not be judged for what mistakes he has made in the bedroom, but for the quality results he has brought out in chefs and restaurants around the world.

I hope you will come back to Australia soon as well as I would like to see you do an Aussie version of Kitchen Nightmares. I have the US version on DVD and I think that it is great so hopefully one day you will make a season down under.

i agree. I love the way gordon ramsay is in the kitchen. He is a perfectionist and expects it from others. if you dont like it or him, then dont watch the show. if people cant take critical words, then that is their insecure issues.
