You would think two thriving restaurants in food obsessed Melbourne would be enough for an accomplished chef! But not Gary Mehigan. Gary can be seen on the LifeStyle FOOD channel hit Boy’s Weekend, he is also a judge on the Australian version of Masterchef, Masterchef Australia, “Good Chef, Bad Chef” (which can also be seen on the LifeStyle FOOD channel), and is constantly in demand to appear as a Guest Chef and Speaker for Food Festivals and the Corporate Speaking circuit.
Gary Mehigan did his apprenticeship and spent his formative years of cooking in London, where being passionate about food was about the only thing that got you through. Not only was it London, but the Connaught and the Souffle, two of the most elite dining rooms in the UK at the time.
Gary has called Melbourne home since 1988 and has worked at a plethora of venues including the gracious Burnheim Beeches, Brown’s Restaurant, Novotel Melbourne, and Sofitel Melbourne. Gary has certainly covered a cross-section of Melbourne dining. Gary now runs two award-winning restaurants in Melbourne, the Fenix (opened in 2000) and “The Maribyrnong Boathouse”.
Gary is continually in demand as a guest chef and consultant, due to his clean, fresh cooking style, as well as his finally honed business skills and salesmanship. Prior to his first series “Good Chef, Bad Chef” Gary was a regular on Channel Ten’s first series of “Ready Steady Cook”, appeared in the "Just Add Braun" television commercial on the Lifestyle Channel in 2003 and in the "Great Chefs Show you how" television advertisement for La Gina Tomatoes in 2002. Expect to see his face on Australian TV for some time to come!
There are some great recipes from Gary Mehigan below.
i have just purchased a " food saver " machine, and was impressed with the way you could marinate food and cook the food in the sealed bag. does anyone have any idea's of any recipes ?
Gary, I bought a beautiful Ariston stove because you recommended it. I did the usual "burn" in of the stove and on my next attempt at preheating the oven at 175 deg. the oven glass exploded. I am having an awful time with Ariston trying to get the oven door replaced. This is through the Dandenong south place, in particular a Michael Hall and a Justin Spiteri, both of whom have been dreadfully rude to me and in one instance inferring that I did something to the oven. I love my new appliance and have cooked on the stove top a few times with wonderful results. It is sad that this has soured my new kitchen renovation as we saved up for 2 years to do this renovation and I loved and respected what you said about Ariston being the best stove on the market.
Dear Gary would love a good recipe for carmelized balsamice thanks maxine
your da best
I think that if I was on Masterchef and I had to compete in one of those eliminated rounds and felt that I was going to be the one that was going to be eliminated, I think that I would quit. It is against my principal to be eliminated and I would rather leave the show with my head held high rather than being eliminated as that would make me feel low.
Chris, I agree with you. If I was on that show, I too would quit if I knew that I was going to be eliminated as I would be worried that my friends would say that I was stupid and that they knew that would happen. I wouldn't particapate on those shows in the first place as I know that I wouldn't be that good.
I would never compete on Masterchef as I am a very sore loser and would get very upset if I get eliminated. Also I wouldn't be able to compete in these pressure tests as well. I also feel that you have your favourites who are lucky enough to pull through when they should have been eliminated.
Gary, I made that Ozzo Bucco that you made on MasterChef for dinner tonight and it smells great. I used beef instead of veal and I didn't have any cannelli beans so I used Fava beans instead, but they tasted just as good. I am looking forward to trying it as the smell is going through the house.
Gary, I think that you are great and that Ozzo Bucco you made on MasterChef looked really nice and I am going to give it a go soon, but that photo of you is a real shocker. You need to comb your hair before they take it after that you would look nice.
That's a REALLY bad pic Gary!!! You look like Ginger Meggs Dad!!! Please change it!!!

Hi Gary, I love cooking and my hubbie brought me a pasta machine. After several failed attempts, I put it back in the cupboard for the last 6mths until you and Janelle did a recipe together, which was bacon, tomato and cream pappedelle. After watching you make the pasta and explain how to work it I finally made this recipe with the help of my kids and OMG what an awesome recipe. Thankyou so much. I will take this knowledge to also make other kinds of pasta now. The machine will never be in the cupboard again. Cheers. Cath Trimble,Townsville, Queensland. cathyt7@bigpond.com
Thrilled Fenix has reopened for diners. Can't wait to taste the new menu.
What can I say - Im in love with Gary.... but then I suspect Im not alone??
Tuned into MC later than the norm but have been hooked on it ever since! Absolutely love your approach to both your cooking( especially on the masterclasses) and mannerism towards the contestants.
Been watching the repeats of MC Aussie over here in good old Blighty. Think you are the tops. Love the food you do on the masterclasses. Watched it once, then was sooooo having withdrawal symptoms that we are recording the repeats. Can't wait for the new series nd darern't go on the Mc website in case i see who wins. Want to watch it every day, but we won't gwt it till next year. Love it You George and Matt xx
Gary we love your style, the food you cook, the way you present and find the good points to lift a contestant (m/chef) who has just cooked a not so nice dish. But, after a trip to Melbourne and a highlight of booking a table at The Boathouse it was a very big letdown. We understand it is casual dining. The food was pretty ordinary. It needs you there with your finger on the pulse or someone you can trust to do it for you. We remain big fans.
I would like the recipe for the Jam Tart you made on 25th June
I would like the recipe to the Jam Tart you made on GC BC on 25 june
Thanks for showing my 3 boys that cooking can be enjoyed by all. We curl up on the couch most nights and watch MC together. I even come home from work occassionally to MC on the telly and one of them cooking up a storm. As for me - I wanna go on a "Boys weekend", you guys are great. Love the food, locations and the comaraderie you share. oh yes, and dare I say that I agree with the comments above - you are hot Gary!!
love gary, love masterchef, love boys weekend and absolutely love his new cookbook 'comfort food'. it's an absolute winner gary!!!
I just bought yur cookbook, friggen awesome. I was a bit disappointed to be reading the thandyous and not finding any comment in there about Janella. After all she has given you some pretty good tips. You are both wonderful to watch luv ya
Hi, I am a recently turned 13 year old girl who just realised that JNR Master Chef was for 8-12 yr olds. I love to cook and at my school last year we had a mystery box challenge and a pressure test and I won both and since cooking class I have found a love of cooking food. Anyway, what do the 12-17 yr olds do if they want to be on Master Chef??? Its so not fair. Hope you could put-in a good word...
hi gary i watch the austrilia mastercheff sercies and it was good, i coluld not belive that julie won, she was good, i am now just to about to satrt cooking south asia food soon, i would like your avice if thats ok gary, i think you are the excellant cheff, hope yuo feel better soon, sumixx form england.
I love Gary, i'm from Quebec, Canada !
love your shows, especially Boys Weekend, great fun & even have inspired my husband to cook in actual fact he does all the cooking now. Hope boys weekend becomes a regular show.... would appreciate some gluten free recipes also. Thanks
Love the show. I cant wait for the dvd either.
The baking time for the Ricotta Pudding with Fresh Raspberries Clotted Cream is incorrect. I followed your recipe from the show and you stipulate 35 minutes. Unfortunately, the "printed" version stipulates 60 to 70 minutes. Nevertheless, I love the pudding (I cooked mine for approx 25 mins and have served it cold). It is light and I believe, "guilt free". :)
looking for garys doughnut recipe from the other day
U r really hot i love all of your shows
Can anyone help me with the octopus recipe thats was on the show on 16/11. It is not listed on this website. Gary, if your listening, i would love to try this. My email is winelover@hotmail.com
Gary I have to say that whoever 'submits' your recipes to the Lifestyle Food site isn't following the recipe on the show... as I found out today. The Linzer Torte from the show & the recipe here are vastly different. Part of the method for is Souffle Swiss is missing and the Club Sandwich has some minor differences. Might be worth having a squiz at.
One of the things I like so much about the show is the obvious pleasure both Gary and Janella get from their own and each others food - nice to see you both eating with relish at the end of each segment!
i really enjoy good chef bad chef as it shows you 2 ways of cooking so you have the option to take either and i love all the recipes gary and janella seem to work well together and i got so excited when i found out where you are from janella as i am also of the same origin (i am wondering though how hard was it to change the way you look at food and the way you cook food)keep up the good work love you both. :)
Hi cricketfooty. Thanks! It's on my website on the RECIPE page. www.janellapurcell.com
Hi Janella, Luv the show. Can u help me? On 16/11 Gary did an octopus recipe that is not listed on the website.
Great recipies, very entertaining show. Congratulations guys well done. Where can I access the black rice dish from the recent week?
I am looking for the recipe for the coconut and pineapple cocktail with a coconut floater on top.
I really like Gary. I also like Master chef :)
Is Gary from Birmingham originally?
Enjoy your deserving return to obscurity. You unconscionable judge.
Not nice.
You are a very appealing personality Gary. I enjoy your cooking, comments and, dare I say it?, your dimples. I wish you all the best in your life and I will be following all that you do on T.V.
I have a F Book group about him if people want to join. I also like his dimples :)

i am trying to find the breakfast smoothie recipe with LSA.....
1/3 cup strawberries 1/2 cup chopped pineapple ice 1/3 soy or rice milke (lite) 1/2 cup ice three heaped dessert spoons of LSA ALL in a blender and whiz. Enjoy
Gary you have judged masterchef Autralia but now what you need i a Masterchef for kids/teens it would be awesome for us teens to be able to have the amount of adrenaline and excitement that the amateur chefs on masterchef get when they get to cook. I would think that alot of kids would enjoy the life experience that they gain and the fun they would have getting it off you and george Hope you take my idea into consideration A 14 yr old boy from Wollongong =)
i love the hair good idea getting the hair cut
How dare Gary criticize a bone in a quail on Masterchef when the "food" at his Boathouse Restaurant is comparable to a good day at KFC
agree, Gary is awesome but Ray has a point...a good point lol lol lol
P.O Gary is awesome
WOW :) You are amazing :) xoxo
Well done Gary, that was entertainment!!!! Bring on the DVD series to buy!!!!
I love you gary!!!!
First show just so much fun, looks like these guys really had a tough time making this thing!
