Strawberries are one of the delights of Spring and Summer. These heart shaped fruits are high in nutritional value (they are rich in folate, vitamin C and antioxidants) and are low in calorie. They are really versatile and make a wonderful addition to any recipe.

When choosing strawberries, choose berries that are bright red and avoid those with green or white colour on the flesh. Avoid blemishes as it means they are over riped or have been mishandled. Look for strawberries that are firm with a slight give. You can also tell the ripeness of the fruit by its alluring sweet fragrance.

Strawberries are best eaten on the day of purchase. Simply give them a rinse in water with the green stem on.

This luscious berry is wonderful in desserts such as strawberry and rhubarb tart or in a trifle. You can make them into jams, toss them in a fresh fruit salad or simply dipped in chocolate.

Strawberries love... cream, chocolate, balsalmic vinegar, yoghurt, custard, honey, cream cheese, coconut
