International Flavour – Tsukji Fish Markets

Tsukiji Central Wholesale Market is a large wholesale market for fish, fruit and vegetables in Central Tokyo. It is the most famous of over ten central wholesale markets that handle the collection and distribution of fruit, vegetables, flowers, meat and fish in metropolitan Tokyo. Tsukiji Market is best known as one of the world's largest fish markets, handling over 2,000 tons of marine products per day.

The market is huge, covering some 210,000 sq. m. and supplies 90 percent of all fish consumed in the greater Tokyo area. The refrigeration rooms which are not open to the public, can hold enough fish to supply Tokyo for up to ten days.

The fish is so fresh that according to the locals, the markets don’t smell and are extremely clean.

The Japanese have a diet very high in fish and the chefs in Japan attend the auctions at the markets to bid for the very best fish they can get – the auctions are fierce and competative. Auction starts at 0530 with tuna the first fish for auction.
