Essential items you should always try and have in the fridge

Parsley and Coriander

For me, no meal is complete without fresh herbs, and these are both great all-rounders which lift most cuisines.

A bottle of Australian Semillon Sauvignon Blanc

My summer favourite, can make an ordinary night at home a little more of an occasion.

Parmesan

With parmesan and parsley in the fridge, and pasta in the pantry, dinner is never more than ten minutes away.

Organic or Free Range Chicken

Whenever our family is feeling tired, overworked or just in need of some comfort, a simple roast chicken with lemon and sea salt is the tonic that restores the balance to our lives.

Eggs

Boiled, fried, "in a hole', omelette, eggs are the perfect protein source for breakfast, lunch and dinner, we go through a couple of dozen a week usually.

Milk

A kitchen staple that never goes out of fashion, it is hard to imagine breakfast at home without milk.

Yoghurt

With stewed fruit, with your muesli or as an alternative to cream or crème fraiche on dessert, even just the idea of yoghurt makes you feel like you're doing your body a favour.

Butter

After being so badly out of fashion for so long, there is nothing more delicious than butter spread on.

Fresh green vegetables

No meal is complete without a huge serving of green vegetables, whether they're steamed, stir-fried or in a salad.

Crisp apples

An apple a day... nothing matches apples cold from the fridge.
